I need some organizational help, please

I started organizing my coat closet over my Christmas holiday and still havent gotten around to finishing it.  Hopefully this challenge will be what I need to motivate me to get finished.  This is the ONLY storage closet in the entire house.  All other closet are in our bedrooms.  This is definately an issue when it comes to having a place for everything.  My coat closet looks like a tornado hit it, and I am stuck with what to do with all this stuff.  Wanna see for yourself.


See what I mean.  and I didnt take the picture before I moved all of this to the kitchen counter.


There is a lot of stuff in this closet.  It serves so many purposes and isnt functioning well at all.  I pulled everything out to take a look at how it could function better and tried to make sense of what I should do.


So far I threw away a bunch of papers that we no longer needed.  I was left with a big stack of my sons school papers that I cant part with, and plan to use this system to get it organized.  As for this closet it is still a thorn in my side and really doesnt look much better.  The games moved from the top shelf to the floor because I dont have anywhere else to put them.  I am hoping that I get some inspiration from you all because at the moment the closet still is one hot mess.

    I think your closet could go a lot further for you with more shelving. I moved the one stationary shelf up about a foot or so and it made a big difference in the amount of room I had to store things in the bottom.

    I came here from A bowl full of lemons. We have a catch-all closet like that in our house under the stairs. I bought a closetmaid shelf system that attaches to the wall and is adjustable. It was amazing the amount of storage it gave me, maybe it might help in your closet.

    I think if it's possible for you to raise your coat pole up to give you more room for sotrage below and like Amy said to install a few shelves it would make your life a lot easier.

    You can atleast have 2 shelves at the bottom. That will give you lots of plave to store more things. Use bins to make the closet look more organized.

    I agree with adding shelves, or baskets for the games? Easy access and cleanup for your son? I love the green on your walls : )
